The Manual Porsche 911 Carrera S Is Back, and It’s the Real Deal

When Porsche updated the 911 to the 992.2 generation for the 2025 model year, it quietly dropped the manual transmission from the Carrera S, leaving it PDK-only for the first time in years. Enthusiasts noticed immediately, and loudly. Less than two years later, Porsche is reversing course. The 2027 911 Carrera S with MT Package, unveiled in August at Monterey Car Week, brings the stick back, and it isn’t a stripped-down way to save weight or money. It’s the opposite: a fully equipped, more expensive version of the Carrera S built specifically for people who want to drive the car themselves.

What it actually is

The MT Package pairs the Carrera S’s twin-turbo 3.0-liter flat-six, 473 hp and 390 lb-ft, with the same six-speed manual gearbox used in the 911 Carrera T, not the old seven-speed manual the 992.1-generation Carrera S offered as a no-cost option through 2024. That gearbox comes standard with a dual-mass flywheel and a switchable auto-blip function for rev-matched downshifts, along with a walnut-capped shift knob and a badge engraved “MT.”

This is exclusively a rear-wheel-drive proposition, offered in both coupe and Cabriolet, and it’s exclusive to North America; Porsche isn’t bringing it to other markets. The MT Package isn’t just a transmission swap either. It comes standard with PASM Sport suspension riding 10mm lower than stock, rear-axle steering, the Sport Chrono Package, titanium exhaust, and a SportDesign front fascia. New center-lock wheels, a first for the Carrera S, shave more than 17 lbs of unsprung weight, helping the manual coupe land at 3,327 lbs, just 11 lbs heavier than the lighter, less powerful Carrera T. Porsche’s official numbers put 0-60 at 3.9 seconds and top speed at 191 mph, both slower than the PDK-equipped Carrera S. That’s the point. This car isn’t chasing a lap time.

What it costs, and who’s actually getting one

Pricing starts at $169,450 for the coupe and $183,350 for the Cabriolet, including Porsche’s $2,350 destination fee. That’s roughly $10,900 over a comparably specced PDK Carrera S, which starts at $158,550, and it lands well above the Carrera T’s $150,350 starting point despite sharing that car’s gearbox. Porsche’s own math suggests the MT Package is close to a wash once you account for equipment you’d otherwise have to option separately onto a PDK car, but there’s no getting around it: this is the most expensive way into a manual 911 Carrera S there has ever been.

Orders opened the day of the announcement, and Porsche expects deliveries to begin before the end of 2026. With this car, Porsche now offers seven manual-transmission variants across the 911 lineup in North America, spanning from the Carrera T up through the GT3 family, a genuinely unusual commitment to the clutch pedal at a moment when most of the industry has walked away from it entirely.

Why this is actually a driver’s car, not just a badge

It would have been easy for Porsche to call this a marketing exercise: add a manual option, charge a premium, move on. That isn’t what happened here. The MT Package pairs the transmission with the specific hardware that makes a manual 911 worth having, rear-axle steering for tighter, more predictable turn-in, a properly lowered PASM Sport suspension, and a curb weight disciplined enough to sit within 11 lbs of the purpose-built Carrera T. Porsche didn’t just refit an old gearbox into a modern chassis and hope for the best.

Timo Resch, president and CEO of Porsche Cars North America, put it plainly: “Managing a clutch and shift lever isn’t for everyone, but for the drivers who want it there really is no substitute.” That’s a company acknowledging that a manual transmission is objectively the slower choice, 0.4 seconds slower to 60 than the PDK car, and building it anyway, for the people who care more about the process than the number. In a market where three-pedal cars keep disappearing, Porsche just made the Carrera S more analog, not less, and priced it like they mean it.
