Can You Track a Rental Supercar? Here’s What Actually Works

Lamborghini Huracán Super Trofeo race car on track

A lot of people book a Lamborghini for the weekend assuming a track day is on the table if they feel like it. It isn’t, not with a standard rental. The insurance that comes with nearly every exotic rental agreement in California excludes track use entirely, and driving onto a circuit voids your coverage the moment you cross pit lane. If you actually want to drive a supercar on a track, you need a different product, and the pricing looks nothing like a normal day rental.

Why your rental Huracan can’t go to Thermal Club

Every major exotic rental company writes track exclusions into the contract for a reason: their insurance carriers require it. Progressive and State Farm void coverage the instant a rental vehicle enters a racing facility, and the specialty insurers that do offer track coverage charge a 25 to 40 percent premium on top of an already expensive policy. Rental companies aren’t being precious about this, they’re passing along a real constraint from the people underwriting the car.

So the standard rental you’d book from mph club or Napa Valley Supercars for a canyon run is not the same product as a track day, even though it’s the same make and model of car. Asking a normal exotic rental counter if you can take their car to Willow Springs or Thermal Club will get you a firm no.

What actually works: per-lap experiences

The real track-day market for supercars runs through companies built specifically for it, with their own fleet, their own insurance, and pricing structured around laps rather than days. Racing Adventures runs multitrack experiences across Los Angeles, Monterey, and a few Arizona locations, with cars that include the Lamborghini Huracan, Lamborghini Gallardo, McLaren MP4-12C, and Ferrari 488 GTB. Pricing starts around $429 for three laps, plus a required insurance add-on that runs $50 to $120 depending on the car.

Exotics Racing operates a similar model out of Las Vegas and the LA area, with a larger fleet, roughly 60 cars, and per-lap pricing that comes in under $100 a lap on their entry-level cars. It’s a barer-bones experience than Racing Adventures, less concierge, more turnstile, but it’s a genuinely cheap way to get laps in a real supercar on a real circuit.

Both models solve the insurance problem the same way: you’re not driving your own rental onto a track, you’re driving their track car, insured by them, for a fixed number of laps.

The membership route

If per-lap pricing feels like a tourist experience and you want repeat access, the two names that come up are Thermal Club and Club Sportiva. Thermal Club is a members-only motorsports country club in the Coachella Valley with its own supercar fleet, full-service garage, and instructors on-site. It’s genuinely exclusive: membership requires an application, and pricing isn’t published, which tells you what tier of spending it’s built for.

Club Sportiva runs more like a fractional supercar club, with memberships starting around $180 a month that bundle track access with regular driving privileges across their fleet. It’s a meaningfully lower bar to entry than Thermal Club, aimed at people who want ongoing access rather than a single day out.

Which one actually fits

If you want to say you’ve driven a Huracan on a real track once, Racing Adventures or Exotics Racing gets you there for a few hundred dollars, no membership required. If you’re doing this regularly and want to build real seat time, a Club Sportiva membership makes more financial sense than paying per-lap rates every time. And if money genuinely isn’t the constraint, Thermal Club is the actual answer, but it’s built for people who already know that.

What doesn’t work, no matter how it’s framed, is assuming your weekend rental comes with track privileges. Check the fleet you’re booking from, not the make and model, before you plan a track day around it.
