Turo vs. a Traditional Exotic Rental Company: What a Supercar Actually Costs After Insurance

Turo listings for exotic cars often look like a bargain next to a traditional rental counter. They usually aren’t, once you add the one thing every Turo booking requires and most listed prices don’t show: insurance.

What Turo actually charges once you add insurance

Browse Lamborghini listings in Los Angeles on Turo right now and a Huracan EVO in Beverly Hills runs $1,439 to $1,518 a day, in the same range as a traditional rental counter. But that sticker price is just the host’s rate. Turo requires every guest to select a protection plan on top of it, and for a car in this price range, the options are worse than they look.

Turo’s zero-deductible Premier plan, the one that would make the car worth driving without a knot in your stomach, is not available for any vehicle worth $60,000 or more. A Huracan clears that threshold by a wide margin. That leaves two choices: the Standard plan, which costs 40 percent of the trip price and still carries a $500 deductible, or the Minimum plan, which runs 18 to 25 percent and carries a $3,000 deductible. Neither covers mechanical failure or interior damage either way.

Run the math on that Beverly Hills Huracan at Standard coverage: the 40 percent protection fee turns a $1,439 day rate into roughly $2,015 a day, and you’re still on the hook for the first $500 of any damage. There’s a second limit worth knowing about, too: Turo’s physical damage coverage caps at the car’s actual cash value or $200,000, whichever is lower. On a car that costs more than that to replace, you are not fully covered even after paying for protection.

What a traditional rental company charges

A traditional exotic rental counter works differently. mph club’s Los Angeles Huracan rate, for comparison, starts at $1,295 a day, and that’s the number you actually pay, no percentage-based protection fee stacked on top. What it requires instead is that you already carry your own full-coverage insurance before you can rent, plus a refundable security deposit, typically in the $2,500 to $5,000 range depending on the car, held on a credit card and released once the car comes back undamaged.

That’s a real cost too, just a different shape of one: if you don’t already carry a policy that extends to a rental like this, you may need to arrange one before you can book at all. But the quoted day rate is the day rate. There’s no 40 percent surcharge waiting at checkout.

Why the real numbers rarely match the sticker price

The two models are solving different problems. Turo is a peer-to-peer marketplace renting out individually owned cars, so its insurance has to work for any guest and any host, which is why it’s priced as a percentage with hard caps rather than built into a flat rate. A traditional rental company owns its fleet and prices insurance risk into the operation itself, which is why it can quote one number and ask you to arrive already covered rather than buying a plan at checkout.

The practical effect: Turo’s listed prices look competitive or even cheaper at a glance, but for anything in supercar territory, the mandatory protection plan usually erases that advantage, and you’re left with a deductible and a coverage cap a traditional rental’s flat rate doesn’t carry.

Which one actually makes sense

If the car you want is a Turo-exclusive, something no traditional fleet in your city carries, price out the full total, day rate plus protection plan, before you compare it to anything else. For mainstream exotic models like the Huracan, where both options exist side by side, a traditional rental company’s flat rate is usually the more predictable number, and it’s worth calling to confirm exactly what deposit and insurance they require before you book.

Pricing reflects listed rates at time of publication from Turo and mph club and will vary by specific vehicle, host, location, and season. Insurance terms are subject to change; confirm current protection plan rules and rental requirements directly before booking.
